003: Flower Atop The Mountain

This comic was drawn by the talented Eastfist. His art can be yours too if you click and visit his page.

Unlike the other comics we have here, the script for this one was written from my memory. I can no longer remember where or from whom I heard this story from. Efforts to find this story online or to trace  its providence have proved to be futile. So, to sum up:

I cannot confirm if this is a Native American story.

I cannot confirm anything about this story, really.

I have chosen to portray it in a Native American setting, as that was how I think it was told to me. However, geographically speaking, if these are Cheyenne Indians, (or other Native American tribes in the ‘Mid-West’,) then it is geographically possible for this story to be set there. There are many great mountain ranges west of their location. But of course, this story could have been set anywhere else in the world.

Regardless, I believe the impact on this story cannot be denied. The plot twist that there really is no flower to ‘get’ left a deep impression on me. So much so that I remembered the lesson, but forgot how I learnt about it.

If this story had a profound effect on you too, or if you can shed some light on the background of this story, please let us know in the comments.

Update:

Thanks to imgur user, GurkhaGurung! He pointed out a source for this story. Apparently its called Yonder Mountain. I did a bit of digging and found a YouTube video with a similar storyline entitled: Yonder Mountain A Cherokee Legend. I guess this confirms it is a Native American story. The version I heard deviates quite a bit from the source though. Still, the original is worth checking out.
