037: Want to know who your friends are?

“You want to know who your friends are? Start your own business and ask for their support.” – Unknown

This was drawn and storyboarded by Inkology. Check out his awesome work at his Facebook page.

I came across this quote while browsing Facebook. Someone shared a picture of Steve Jobs with this quote pasted over. A quick search revealed this quote to have no determinable origin.

The piece of advice this quote gives actually is pretty widespread, though probably not as concise as this quote puts it. When I was younger, a lot of business advice came from my father. He isn’t a business person, but he has a very strong common sense. He is good at observing and understanding basic human nature. One of the things he noticed accurately was the way people behaved in relation to the subject of money.

I don’t need to be the first to tell you that money is essential but not everything. Advice like this floats around a lot, but not everyone heeds this advice. My dad could tell not only if a person heeded such advice, but to what extent they did. This ability to read a person is not just essential in business, but in life in general. It saved him a lot of trouble because he knew who he could count on, and he could predict how to deal with people in times of need.

Keep this piece of advice in your mind when you deal with people over the subject of money. Common sense guidelines like these seldom have exceptions. It could save you from any troubles relationships that follow if you become too close to people who aren’t looking out in your best interests.

Let me know in the comments below,  if you ever had any experiences dealing with ‘friends’ who run from you at the first sign of trouble.
